This custom designed and custom-built home on a sloping block is an example of just how you can make a home your own, when you build with Horizon Homes.
These clients wanted to take full advantage of their corner block, which has a 2.5m slope from front to rear.
They wanted a flat roof design.
The exterior has obvious street appeal, with a façade that provides a charming mix of textures – tumbled Travertine tiles provide a warm counter to the sleek rendered façade and aluminium windows.
The wow factor continues when you open the front door – a feature in itself – and step into a double height entry hallway. The owner has chosen to tile their generously proportioned entryway and a magnificent green mosaic wall provides an interesting backdrop to a floating stairs built with a single steel stringer and glass balustrade.
In fact, tiles and stone are featured heavily in this home and we added underfloor heating to some areas to keep the home warm.
Downstairs, the owners opted for a large kitchen / lounge / dining area. There are two other separate lounge areas on this lower floor, as well as a guest room with ensuite, and a prayer room. There is also a powder room, laundry, and a large walk-in pantry.
Upstairs, there are four bedrooms – two with ensuites, and a family bathroom. Another sitting area provides some private family space.
BASIX Requirements
Some of the important features of this custom-built home in Strathfield are things you can’t see.
BASIX stands for Building Sustainability Index and aims to deliver equitable, effective water and greenhouse gas reductions across the New South Wales. BASIX is one of the strongest sustainable planning measures to be undertaken in Australia.
To meet BASIX on this knock down rebuild, Horizon Homes added extras like water-saving fixtures in the bathrooms and kitchen, a rainwater tank to collect runoff from the roof – this supplies the toilets, the cold water tap for the washing machine, and the garden.
The BASIX requirements also meant we paid extra attention to thermal comfort, ventilation, and natural and artificial lighting.
It all adds up to a beautiful home that’s also comfortable to live in, with reduced running costs.
